Women and girls in Sirsa received free sanitary pads on Tuesday under the Priyadarshini Udaan initiative of the All India Mahila Congress, aimed at promoting hygiene, health awareness and dignity. The programme began with tributes to BR Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, with speakers emphasising the continued relevance of his ideals of equality, justice, and rights.
All India Congress Committee general secretary and Sirsa MP Kumari Selja said raising awareness around women’s health and dignity was vital, noting that many women still lacked access to basic facilities due to limited awareness and resources. She described initiatives like Priyadarshini Udaan as meaningful steps toward empowering women.
Addressing broader concerns, Selja stressed the need to uphold constitutional values and expressed worry over growing social divisions. She also highlighted the importance of transparency in implementing women’s reservation and pointed to challenges faced by farmers, who were struggling to sell produce at mandis due to inefficiencies in the portal system.
During her visit, Selja interacted with residents of JJ Colony, attended a function at Ambedkar Bhawan, and later visited the local grain market to hear the farmers’ grievances firsthand. The event drew a large turnout, including Mahila Congress district president Krishna Phogat, Kalanwali MLA Shishpal Keharwala, Sirsa MLA Gokul Setia and senior Congress leaders such as Veerbhan Mehta, Naveen Kedia, Rajkumar Sharma, Atma Prakash Mehra, Rajesh Chadiwal, Tej Bhan, Satpal Mehta, and Sandeep Nehra.
According to the congress leaders, the Priyadarshini Udaan scheme specifically targeted women and adolescent girls, particularly from underprivileged backgrounds, by raising awareness about menstrual hygiene and providing sanitary pads.
Organisers said the initiative was a key step towards improving health standards and empowering women with dignity, enabling them to participate more actively in community life.
