A students’ meeting, Chhatra Hit Mahapanchayat, was called by JJP in Hisar on Monday. It followed last week’s controversies after JJP student wing activists allegedly created a ruckus at Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology (GJUST), leading to the arrest of six workers. Tensions also rose today over a police vehicle blocking Dushyant Chautala’s convoy.

The meeting, held at Krantiman Park to demand reforms in the education system, formed a 31-member committee. The panel issued a five-day ultimatum to the district administration over students’ demands and warned of intensifying the agitation if they were not addressed.

After the meeting, a 31-member committee comprising representatives of khaps and student organisations was constituted. A delegation later submitted a memorandum to the Divisional Commissioner and IG, Hisar, listing their demands.

Student leader Anant Ram Tanwar, who chaired the meeting, said representatives of several khaps, social groups, political leaders, and student organisations had come together to discuss problems faced by students. He warned that if the government did not take appropriate steps soon, another major panchayat would be held and a significant decision taken.

Purnia MP Pappu Yadav said he would raise the matter and strongly voice students’ concerns. Likening the effort to leaders such as Devi Lal and Chaudhary Charan Singh, he said everyone must unite to take education to the last person in society. Yadav added that panchayats are not organised for any particular religion or sect, but to fight injustice. He alleged that the BJP government intends to destroy the education system to allow capitalist forces and “blind followers” to dominate.

Former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala said his objective was to save educational institutions from “saffronisation”. He alleged that seminars in institutions were being used to teach an ideology that limits students’ thinking and that BJP meetings were also being held in universities. He appealed to khap representatives at the mahapanchayat to help save the education system, adding that the state machinery is used to suppress anyone who raises their voice against the government’s wrong policies.

Youth leader Digvijay Chautala said treating students like terrorists merely for raising their voice and for the alleged damage to two flowerpots was completely unjustified.
