While many focus on Valentine’s Week, Chaudhary Devi Lal University (CDLU) is observing the same period as ‘Annapurna Week’, a seven-day campaign dedicated to service, compassion and social responsibility.

The initiative is jointly led by Dr Saraswati Chaturvedi from the Music Department and Dr Timsi Mehta from the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. Each day of the week focuses on helping the needy by distributing food, educational materials and essential items, with active participation from students.

The week begins with ‘Book and Pencil Day’, during which study materials are distributed to young children. ‘Flour-Rice Day’ follows, providing basic food supplies, while ‘Sweet Day’ was observed by sharing sweets. The fourth day focused on distributing biscuits and savoury snacks, the sixth day on halwa, and the final day, ‘Annapurna Day’, encouraged students to contribute food according to their ability for the poor and for cow welfare initiatives.

Dr Mehta highlighted that the programme encourages students to embrace Indian values of service and social responsibility rather than blindly following Western trends. Students involved in the initiative said it helped them understand real social challenges and contributed to their personal growth.

University Chancellor Prof Vijay Kumar praised the initiative, saying it helps students develop empathy and a sense of duty towards underprivileged communities. He added that such programmes strengthen national unity, Indian cultural values and humanitarian thinking while supporting the holistic development of students.
