Smart Karnal Vision: Mayor unveils four-year mega development plan

The Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) has unveiled a future roadmap as Mayor Renu Bala Gupta completed her first year of her third consecutive term in office. With 237 development projects worth Rs 91.54 crore already executed across all Wards, the Mayor reiterated the commitment of the state and Union Governments to making Karnal a smart, organised and citizen-friendly city.

The Mayor said that over the past year, the civic body had delivered wide-ranging improvements — from water supply and sewerage upgrades to solar energy initiatives. She was accompanied by Karnal MLA Jagmohan Anand, KMC Commissioner Dr Vaishali Sharma, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s Karnal representative Kavinder Rana, former BJP district working president Brij Gupta, and officials from the corporation.

A dedicated workforce of 1,289 sanitation staff ensured cleaner streets with a budget of Rs 47.92 crore, while property tax recovery set a new benchmark. Against a target of Rs 27 crore, the corporation collected Rs 29.54 crore, surpassing expectations and establishing a record.

She said eight colonies had been approved and 95 proposals were sent to the state government. Under the Swamitva Yojana, 2,066 families received ownership rights to their homes, ending decades of uncertainty. The corporation also facilitated the registration of 42 shops, strengthening local commerce.

She presented a future vision document outlining projects for the next four years. Key priorities include the completion of the dairy-shifting project, with 57 dairies already relocated to Pingli Dairy Complex and the remaining scheduled within six months.

“Multi-level commercial complexes and parking facilities are proposed at Old Vegetable Market, Ramleela Ground and Valmiki Chowk. Road widening and beautification projects will cover major stretches, including Meera Ghati to Namaste Chowk, Kalpana Chawla Medical College gate to Karnal Club, and several residential colonies. smart lighting and cement-concrete roads are part of the modernisation drive,” she said.

“Beautification of the road between Maharaja Agrasen Chowk and Geeta Dwar, along with a food hub, will be carried out, while musical fountains at Meera Ghati Chowk and extensive greening of parks and belts will also be implemented,” she said.

She lauded the efforts of KMC officials, employees and sanitation staff, highlighting the city’s achievement of securing the third rank in the country in Swachh Survekshan. Mayor Gupta credited the “triple engine government” of PM Modi, CM Saini and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for their guidance and support. She emphasised that the focus remains on timely, transparent and sustainable development. “Our vision is to give Karnal a new identity as a model smart city,” she said.
