Son’s future at stake, Haryana family in distress

The family of 24-year-old Gagandeep Singh, a resident of Digoh village in Fatehabad, is in deep distress after he was deported from the US today. His parents, along with his younger sister, have been in tears since hearing the news.

Gagandeep’s mother has been fainting repeatedly, worried about her son’s future. The village sarpanch, Harsimran Singh, and other villagers are trying to console the family, while a doctor has also been called due to the deteriorating health of family members.

Gagandeep had not yet reached his home in Digoh on Wednesday evening, though villagers were making efforts to get in touch with him.

Gagandeep’s father, Sukhwinder Singh (52), had big dreams for his son. In September 2022, he sent Gagandeep to the UK for higher studies by selling 2.5 acres of their 3.5 acre land to afford the study visa.

According to a relative of Gagandeep, due to a lack of part-time job opportunities in the UK, Gagandeep could not pay his university fee. The financial strain at home forced him to fall prey to a visa agent’s deceit, and in January 2025, he illegally entered the US in search of work.

Unfortunately, Gagandeep was detained by the US authorities for illegal entry and his family lost contact with him for nearly 20 days. Now, Gagandeep has been deported back to India as part of a US policy, and the news has caused concern in his village.

According to the village sarpanch, Gagandeep is the only son of Sukhwinder Singh and his younger sister, who is 20, is a student. The family had sold a portion of their land to send Gagandeep abroad in the hope of a better future for him.

Now, they are left devastated by the turn of events. Gagandeep’s father supports the family by raising buffaloes and selling milk to manage their daily expenses.
