A state-level team of the Health Department has been camping in the district to audit health services across government-run hospitals. The team has found some procedural gaps and directed the officials concerned to address the issues without any delay for ensuring smooth delivery of health services to patients.

The team, led by Dr Virender Yadav, Director Health Services, NHM, conducted inspections across Karnal city, Indri, Nissing and Gharaunda, interacting directly with patients and scrutinising frontline service delivery.

On the third day, the focus was on the District Civil Hospital, where surprise checks, including a midnight inspection, highlighted both the strengths and the shortcomings of the system.

Dr Yadav visited the emergency ward, labour room, blood bank and laboratory midnight on Thursday, and spoke to patients and attendants to assess the ground reality.

During an inspection of the Civil Hospital laboratory on Friday, Dr Yadav questioned staff about the availability and efficiency of diagnostic tests. He ordered an overhaul of the patient registration system, directing authorities to establish two separate counters — one for new registrations and another for follow-up cases.

“Old patients are forced to stand in long queues even for slip updates, which normally take a few seconds. New registrations take even longer. Separate windows will reduce waiting time and streamline patient flow,” he said.

Civil Surgeon Dr Poonam Chaudhary briefed him about the facilities being provided to patients in Karnal district. “All the health institutes are being visited by the state team to review facilities being provided to patients. We are also assessing the implementation of government programmes on the ground. So far, we have covered the District Civil Hospital, all sub-divisional hospitals, CHCs, PHCs — especially 24x7 facilities — and around 20 per cent of sub-centres in the district,” Dr Yadav added.

Director General Health Services Dr Manish Bansal will chair a meeting of the health officials on Saturday to review the outcomes of the visit.

When the team members reached outside medicine OPD, several patients were waiting for routine blood pressure check. A young girl informed the Director that she had been waiting for nearly 30 minutes. In a symbolic gesture, Dr Yadav personally checked her BP.

The team also inspected the oxygen pipeline flow at the dental OPD, evaluated blood bank facilities, and reviewed services in the newborn ward. Interactions were held with attendants of thalassemia patients to understand their concerns regarding regular treatment and support services.
