Haryana Transport Minister Anil Vij today said the department was taking concrete steps to provide better facilities to passengers and employees.

He inaugurated a canteen funded by the ‘Hamari Astha Foundation’, which provides meal to passengers and the needy for Rs 5, at the Ambala Cantonment Bus Stand.

Vij said, “The Hamari Astha Foundation is doing a good job and more social organisations should come forward to help the needy. The government can’t do everything. If more associations also want to do something similar, we will welcome them.”

He also announced to give Rs 5 lakh from his discretionary fund to the foundation. “Around 3 lakh passengers daily travel in the Haryana Roadways, then there are drivers and other staff members who work sincerely and ply on long routes. Several measures are being taken to improve the condition of Haryana Roadways and its bus depots,” he added.

The Transport Minister said, “We have decided to develop rest houses on the national and state highways so that bus drivers and passengers get access to quality food and can relax for a while. Human error is the reason behind nearly 80 per cent of the accidents as drivers don’t get rest. It will take some time but we are working in this direction.” “To provide clean and hygienic food at bus terminals, we are partnering with the Haryana Tourism Department. Initially, this initiative will be rolled out at five bus terminals, including Ambala Cantonment, Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat and Hisar as a pilot project. If successful, it will be expanded to all bus terminals,” he said.

Vij pointed out that if the Haryana Tourism Department would be unable to manage this initiative effectively, they would establish a corporation similar to the Indian Railways’ catering division. The Transport Minister said a mobile- based application would also be launched in which the passengers would not just track the buses, but could also order food. He said, “Sometimes we also face difficulties in getting the reforms done. But we will surely achieve our target.”
