Kurukshetra, August 18

The Thanesar railway station in Kurukshetra will be renovated on the pattern of Metro stations and will have the facility of escalators.

A six-km elevated track will be constructed in Thanesar with the old Thanesar station situated on the Kurukshetra-Narwana section.

Renovation of the station and work of the elevated track will be done simultaneously.  To ensure that work does not obstruct rail traffic, the elevated track will be constructed nearly 20 feet away from the track.

The tender for soil testing and designing for the project has been allotted and the company has been asked to complete the work within three months.

The Central government had cleared the proposal of an elevated railway track. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 224.58 crore. While the Railway’s contribution is Rs 100 crore, the state government will spend the remaining amount.

The track will eliminate railway crossings at Main Bazaar, Jhansa Road, near Birla Mandir, near LNJP Hospital and near the third gate of Kurukshetra University. The project is expected to be completed in two years.

Earlier, two railway overbridges and an underpass were to be constructed near the old bus stand and the third gate of Kurukshetra University.

Even after construction of these overbridges and underpass, commuters will still have to wait on three railway crossings.

Considering all facts, the state authorities had suspended the tendering process for the construction of overbridges on the Kurukshetra-Narwana section.

“Removing railway gates from the city is a long-pending demand. The railway track has divided Thanesar into two parts. The foundation stone for the project will be laid by the Chief Minister on August 22,” said Thanesar MLA Subhash Sudha.
