Three-day national workshop on alcohol-use disorder held in Mahendragarh
A three-day Continuing Rehabilitation Education (CRE) Workshop on “Alcohol use disorder: Assessment, clinical management and psychosocial interventions” jointly organised by the Department of Psychology, Central University of Haryana (CUH), Mahendragarh; Adayu Mental Health Hospital (a Fortis network hospital), Gurugram; and the Indian Association of Health, Research and Welfare (IAHRW), concluded on Saturday.
The event emphasised the significance of evidence-based interventions and multidisciplinary approach in addressing substance-use disorders. Around 135 participants from nearly 10 states across the country attended the workshop.
Dr Sunil Saini, president, Indian Association of Health, Research and Welfare, highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based psychosocial interventions and continued professional training in strengthening addiction treatment and rehabilitation services in India.
The CUH Vice-Chancellor, Prof Tankeshwar Kumar, appreciated the theme and successful organisation of the workshop and stated that it was not only important for the affected individuals, but also a significant step towards building an alcohol-free nation.
He further emphasized the growing challenge of alcohol use and dependence in society and stressed the need for timely assessment, scientific intervention, relapse prevention and psychosocial rehabilitation to ensure long-term recovery and improved quality of life among the affected individuals.
He also appreciated the Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi, for granting CRE approval to the programme.
Prof Payal Kanwar Chandel, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, CUH, who coordinated the programme, stated that the workshop provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and skill enhancement in addiction treatment and rehabilitation. She emphasised that increasing cases of alcohol dependence required trained professionals equipped with scientific assessment techniques, therapeutic competence, and rehabilitation-oriented approaches.
Prof Vishva Chaudhary, head, Department of Psychology, CUH, emphasised the importance of professional preparedness, awareness, and multidisciplinary collaboration in effectively dealing with Alcohol-Use Disorder (AUD).
The concluding day featured expert sessions by clinical psychologists Vaani Jain, Kamna Chhibber and Roshni Sondhi Abbi from Adayu.
