Two youths ‘shoot’ at cab driver, ‘flee’ with car, cash; nabbed within hours

Within hours of the crime, the Rewari police have arrested two youngsters for allegedly shooting at a cab driver, and looting him.
“One of the arrested youngsters — Devanshu from Ajmer, Rajasthan — is pursuing a PhD course, while the other — Shubham Verma of Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh — is preparing for the UGC National Eligibility Test (NET),” said DSP (Bawal) Surender Sheoran, while talking to The Tribune.
The complainant, Sanjay Kumar from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, operates a cab in Delhi-NCR through a mobile phone-based ride-hailing service.
He said one of the youngsters booked his cab to travel from Delhi to Jaipur.
The cab driver alleged that the youths tried to loot him, and one of them shot him in the leg when he resisted.
“Then, they pushed me out (of the car) and fled with the cab. They looted around Rs 18,000 in cash lying in the car,” said the complainant.
The injured cab driver was taken to the Civil Hospital in Rewari.
Taking swift action, the CIA staff and other police officials intercepted the stolen cab near Banipur Chowk on Delhi-Jaipur highway, and nabbed the youths under Operation Hotspot Domination.
The police have recovered the stolen car and seized two pistols, 89 rounds, three magazines, four mobile phones and SIM cards, a wave-blocker (jammer), a GPS detector and a pepper spray from the possession of the accused.
DSP Sheoran said, as per the preliminary investigation, the cab was booked at around 1 am on December 16. The cab driver picked up the two youngsters from the Old Delhi Railway Station and headed for Jaipur. When the taxi arrived near Banipur Chowk in Rewari district, the accused got the cab stopped, stating that they wanted to urinate.
“However, as the driver stopped the cab, one of the accused pointed a pistol at his head. He then shot him in the right leg. The other youngster pushed him aside, and began driving the cab. Later, the driver was pushed out of the car,” the DSP said.
A case had been registered at Kasola police station in this regard, and the accused were being interrogated, he added.
