Water supply, sewerage to be upgraded in Karnal under Rs 125-crore AMRUT-2 scheme
In addition, the project will benefit several colonies with the installation of 20 tubewells
After the completion of the first phase of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Karnal Municipal Corporation (MC) is set to start the AMRUT-2 scheme. Under the scheme, the water supply and sewerage systems will be strengthened at an estimated cost of Rs 125 crore in newly approved colonies as well as villages included in the MC limits. In addition, the project will benefit several colonies with the installation of 20 tubewells.
Under the first phase of AMRUT, around 150 km of sewer pipelines were laid in deficit colonies. A 20 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was constructed at Phoosgarh, an 8 MLD STP in Shiv Colony, and Intermediate Pumping Stations (IPS) were set up at different locations.
To start work under AMRUT-2, a Maharashtra-based agency has been appointed as the consultant for preparing Detailed Project Report (DPR), and the work order has already been issued. The period fixed for preparing the DPR is three months, said Satish Kumar, technical expert at MC.
MC Commissioner Dr Vaishali Sharma said that under the AMRUT-2 scheme, water supply and sewerage pipelines will be laid in eight colonies regularised in December 2023. Areas that could not be covered under the AMRUT-1 scheme will also be included in this project.
New water supply and sewerage pipelines will be laid in Kanika Vihar Extension, RK Puram Part-II, Sukhbir Colony, RK Puram near Rajwaha Road, Vijay Nagar, Balram Colony, Phoosgarh, Shakti Puram Extension, Vikas Colony, and Meerut Road. In addition, the sewerage system will be strengthened and new lines will be laid in Sirsi, Ambedkar Colony, Jhanjhari, Uchana, Dholgarh, and Guru Nanakpura, she added.
Dr Sharma said that around 20 new tubewells will be installed as required to ensure better drinking water supply for residents. Moreover, existing sewer lines will be strengthened. Extensive upgrades to the current sewerage infrastructure will make the city’s system more efficient and durable.
“Once completed, thousands of citizens will benefit from improved water supply and sewerage facilities. MC’s objective is to strengthen basic civic infrastructure and provide residents with clean drinking water and an efficient sewerage system,” she said, adding that the works proposed under this scheme will play an important role in the overall development of the city.
