Waterlogged railway underpasses pose threat to lives in Narnaul
Municipal body seeks urgent action from Railways
Damaged and waterlogged railway underpasses in Narnaul city have turned into safety hazards, posing a constant threat to residents and commuters, particularly two-wheeler riders.
Several underpasses passing through the city have developed deep potholes due to prolonged neglect and lack of maintenance. With rainwater and seepage accumulating inside, these potholes remain hidden, increasing the risk of accidents.
One of the most affected underpasses lies on the Behror Road, which connects Narnaul in Haryana with Behror in neighbouring Rajasthan and witnesses heavy daily traffic.
“The vehicles, especially two-wheelers, passing through the underpasses often get imbalanced due to the water-filled potholes, causing injuries to the commuters,” said Manoj Kaushik, a local resident.
Residents said the problem had persisted for years despite repeated complaints. The situation turned tragic recently when a local woman died after falling from a motorcycle while passing through one of the underpasses.
Following mounting public anger, the municipal authorities have taken up the issue with the Railways, seeking immediate remedial measures to ensure commuter safety.
“A meeting with the Railway officers concerned was convened in this regard. The officials who attended the meeting have been directed to resolve the issue on priority. We will also write to the Railway authorities regarding the matter,” said Deputy Municipal Commissioner Ranbeer Singh.
He added that he had personally inspected the underpasses and assured that appropriate action was being initiated to prevent further mishaps.
