Haryana: Wheat crop free of yellow rust in Yamunanagar, say scientists

A team of agricultural scientists from the Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), Karnal, visited Yamunanagar district to conduct a survey for yellow rust in wheat crops.The team did not find any instance of yellow rust during the inspection but advised farmers to remain vigilant in view of prevailing weather conditions that may favour the disease.The team, led by scientists Arun Gupta and Pramod Sharma from IIWBR, was joined by officials of the Haryana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department — Ashit Kumar, Harinder Kamboj and Surinder Jangra. They surveyed wheat fields in Bakana village (Radaur sub-division), Khadri village (Chhachhrauli sub-division) and Feruwala village (Vyaspur sub-division).The scientists inspected agricultural fields and examined wheat leaves and stems for signs of pest or disease infestation. No symptoms of yellow rust were detected in any of the surveyed villages, bringing relief to farmers and the department. Dr Satish Kumar Arora, Assistant Plant Protection Officer, Yamunanagar, said no pest or disease infestation had been observed in the district so far.“They were also advised to monitor wheat crops for pests and diseases such as yellow rust,” said Dr Satish Kumar. “They were also advised to uproot any plants in their fields where yellow rust is observed, place them in polythene bags and bury them in the ground,” he added. He further said in case of severe infestation, farmers should use fungicides approved by the Central Insecticide Registration Board.
