Wrong parking accounted for 26% challans in Rohtak

Despite road safety awareness campaigns, wrong-side driving and wrong parking remain top traffic offences in Rohtak city, together accounting for nearly 47 per cent of all violations recorded in December.

Of 8,714 traffic challans issued last month, wrong parking and wrong-side driving accounted for over 26 per cent and 21 per cent violations, respectively, indicating utter disregard to basic traffic norms by motorists. As per official information, 2,257 challans were issued for wrong parking, 1,848 for wrong-side driving, 699 for driving without a seat belt, 520 for riding without a helmet, 340 for drunken driving, 158 for overspeeding and two challans for red-light jumping. A total of 2,890 traffic challans were issued for other violations.

During the month, 92 cases were recommended for suspension of driving licence. Additionally, 122 school buses were inspected in the district and two challans were issued. During the previous year, 1,298 school buses were inspected and 26 challans were issued for various violations. Similarly, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) office also issued 339 challans in December and recovered Rs 96.26 lakh in penalty.

DC Sachin Gupta said strict action would be taken against those riding without helmet and driving under the influence of alcohol. “Traffic violators will face stringent action through special weekend drives, CCTV-based challans and joint operations by the police and RTA,” he added.

The DC also directed the officers concerned to ensure that all necessary road safety arrangements are completed at all identified black spots by February 15. He warned that if any lack of arrangements at these points led to the loss of life in a road accident, strict action against officials responsible would be recommended to the state government.

“Weekly monitoring will be conducted for the accident-prone corridors and black spots. Permanent improvements will be made at all such accident sites within one month. Pedestrian safety audits will be completed within 21 days in areas along national highways, bypasses, hospital zones and school zones. The police and municipal authorities will jointly remove encroachments from footpaths,” said Gupta.
