A politician was allegedly duped of Rs 16.70 lakh on the pretext of providing him gold at cheaper rates.

In a complaint to the police, Darbari Lal Chauhan alleged that Virender Sharma, a resident of Karnal, was known to him. Sharma told him that he could provide him gold at cheaper rates, he said.

He alleged that Sharma duped him of Rs 16.70 lakh between January 5, 2018 and February 14, 2018.

“I asked him to return my money when he failed to provide gold to me after several months. Instead of returning the money, he started threatening me with dire consequences,” he alleged.

He lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police on October 25, 2018, but the case was registered at the City police station, Jagadhri, on Thursday after investigation.
