Doctors have advised people to protect eyes during the Covid-19.

“In the present situation, we need to properly cover our face with a mask to slow down the spread of infection and it is equally important to guard our eyes, to keep them safe and healthy,” said doctors.

Dr Sumeet Chopra, professor and head, ophthalmology, DMCH, said there was a lot of concern about precautionary measures to keep the virus at bay. General precautions should be adopted to significantly reduce the risk of getting infected. Wash your hands a lot, maintain contact lens hygiene and avoid touching or rubbing your nose, mouth and especially eyes.

Dr Sahil Goyal, assistant professor in the department of ophthalmology, said there was no evidence that wearing contact lenses increases your risk of getting coronavirus infection but contact lens wearers tend to touch their eyes more than the average person and it might increase the chances of infection. Consider wearing glasses more often as it add a layer of protection, especially if you tend to touch your eyes a lot while using contact lens. For healthcare workers serving Covid patients in the hospital, safety goggles might offer a stronger defence.

Dr Anubha Rathi, assistant professor, advises to avoid rubbing your eyes. If you feel an urge to rub your eye, use a tissue instead of your fingers.
