An inspiring example of dedication and self-reliance has emerged from Sherreshla village near Nahan in Sirmaur district, where a 78-year-old farmer, Roop Singh, walks nearly 12 kilometres every day carrying around 25 kilograms of fresh vegetables on his shoulders to sell in the town.

At a time when most people hesitate to walk even short distances and roads have reached almost every village, the elderly farmer continues his daily journey on foot, reflecting remarkable determination and commitment to his work. His routine is not driven by compulsion but by a strong sense of dignity and attachment to his land.

Roop practices completely natural farming and does not use any chemical fertilisers or pesticides in his fields. He relies on traditional methods of farming that have been passed down through generations. Roop uses cow dung as manure and organic techniques to grow vegetables. According to him, “Whatever grows in nature has its cure in nature. Every disease has a natural solution; one only needs to understand it.”

Despite his age, he carries freshly grown vegetables to Nahan daily and sells them directly, ensuring people get pure and chemical-free produce. Though his vegetables may not look as glossy as market varieties, they are safe and naturally grown.

Sharing a message to the younger generation, Roop urged them not to sell their ancestral land or abandon farming in the pursuit of city life. He believes migration from villages weakens both the land and the social fabric, while working on one’s own land builds strength and self-respect.

The inspiring story gained attention after a video of Roop Singh’s daily routine was shared by retired Major General Atul Kaushik, highlighting his dedication and simple lifestyle. His journey stands as a powerful reminder that hard work, tradition, and connection with nature remain the true pillars of a meaningful life.
