All-India Kisan Congress president Nana Patole has accused the Narendra Modi government of cheating farmers of the country by not implementing the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission report as promised by the BJP in its election manifesto 2014.
On factionalism in the state unit of the Congress, Patole said the party was taking action against those who defied party discipline during a protest at Dharamsala recently.
Addressing a press conference here today, Nana Patole, who is also central party observer, further alleged that the Modi government had bungled data on the cases of suicide being committed by farmers across the country due to crisis in agriculture and increasing debt burden on them. Patole threatened to launch a protest by farmers if the Modi government failed to implement the Swaminathan Commission recommendation and stop import of foreign apple in the interest of farmers.
He said the prices of onion and other vegetables had shot up, but the farmers had been deprived of the remunerative prices.
To suppress unrest among farmers, data on farmer suicides is not being allowed to come on record of the National Crime Report Bureau, Patole charged. Similarly, the government is also trying to curb enrolment of unemployed youth to hide the exact data, he said.
Patole alleged that the Modi government was protecting the interests of a few corporate houses depriving farmers and small industries and traders of their due benefits.
He further alleged that the Modi-Shah duo was gagging the voice of dissent by unleashing political vendetta, slapping frivolous cases and issuing search warrant against leaders of the Opposition.
Nana Patole, who hails from Maharashtra, said before the formation of the Shiv Sena-NCP-Cong alliance government in Maharashtra, the Centre was trying to misuse the office of President by declaring President’s rule in the state. Now it was conducting raids and searches against those who were active in government formation.
