Agnihotri said the day was observed annually on December 7 to honour the “immortal heroes” who laid down their lives or were seriously injured while defending the nation’s territorial integrity. He extended his greetings to serving personnel of the Army, Air Force and Navy, as well as to ex-servicemen and their families.

He said the flags pinned on citizens symbolise public solidarity with the forces, and that donations raised were used for the welfare of families of martyred soldiers, disabled personnel and ex-servicemen. He urged people to contribute generously, noting that the donation was fully exempt from income tax.

Lt Col Kalia later pinned the flag on Jatin Lal, Deputy Commissioner of Una district.
