Palampur: Antibiotic resistance due to indiscriminate use of drugs in animals stressed
Stress laid on judicious use of drugs and promotion of plant-based medicines of Himalayan origin for sustainable disease management in livestock and poultry
A three-day skill development programme for veterinary pharmacists organised by the Department of Veterinary Pathology of Dr GC Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences concluded at CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur, on Thursday.
The training was conducted under the project titled ‘Enhancement of Socioeconomic Status of Scheduled Tribe (ST) Communities in Chamba, Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur districts through Scientific Advancements in Livestock Practices, with Special Focus on the Equine Population’. The project is funded by the National Research Centre on Equines, Hisar (Haryana).
Vice-Chancellor AK Panda, presided over the valedictory session. He commended the Department of Veterinary Pathology for organising a highly-relevant and socially-impactful programme aimed at strengthening livestock healthcare services in tribal regions of the state.
He expressed satisfaction over enthusiasm, dedication and active participation by the veterinary pharmacists throughout the training period. He appreciated the positive feedback received from the participants and urged them to effectively implement the knowledge and practical skills acquired during the programme in their respective field areas.
Panda also highlighted the issue of antibiotic resistance and the residual effects resulting from the indiscriminate use of medicines, particularly antibiotics, in animals. He stressed the need for a judicious use of drugs and advocated the promotion of plant-based medicines of Himalayan origin for sustainable disease management in livestock and poultry.
Head of the Department of Veterinary Pathology RD Patil presented a comprehensive report on the programme.
Course coordinator Rakesh Kumar briefed the gathering on the progress made under the project so far. He also informed the participants about the equine health check-up camps organised in the tribal districts of Himachal. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by course co-coordinator Sonali Mishra.
