Atal Tunnel embodies Vajpayee’s vision, determination: Himachal Governor

Governor Kavinder Gupta on Thursday visited the world-famous Atal Tunnel, and praised its role in transforming Lahaul-Spiti.

He described the tunnel as a remarkable example of modern engineering and cutting-edge technology built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), establishing new dimensions of connectivity and development in the Himalayan region.

The Governor travelled from the south portal of the tunnel to the north, interacting with BRO officials about its construction, safety, and round-the-year traffic management. He said the project embodied former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s vision and determination.

“This tunnel is not just an engineering feat, but also a symbol of strategic strength, border area development and public convenience,” he said.

He noted that Lahaul-Spiti now remained connected to the rest of the state throughout the year, greatly benefiting area residents in travel, healthcare, education and essential services.

The tunnel had also given a major boost to tourism, attracting visitors from across the globe, strengthening local employment and the economy, he added.

Gupta also visited Sissu Lake, the Sissu waterfall, and the revered Raja Ghepan Temple in Lahaul, praying for the welfare of the state. Later, he offered prayers at Hidimba Devi Temple in Manali, appreciating the state’s rich religious and cultural heritage.

He said preserving Himachal’s spiritual traditions and natural beauty was a collective responsibility.
