Awareness camp on child rights held in Lahaul and Spiti
The District Child Protection Unit organised an awareness camp on child rights and protection in Jahlma village, under the leadership of gram panchayat head Krishna Devi. The camp aimed to educate the public about child protection laws, government welfare schemes and the roles of various departments in ensuring child welfare.
Protection Officer (Institutional Care) Joginder Kumar discussed key topics, including Adoption Laws, the Juvenile Justice and Protection Act (2015-16), and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act (2012). He emphasised the role of the District Child Protection Unit in safeguarding children.
Child Development Project Officer Khushvinder highlighted welfare schemes like “Baal Dhan Yojana” and addressed the dangers of drug abuse. Additionally, Dr. Mahesh from the Ayush Department conducted a health camp, providing free medical check-ups.
Tehsil Welfare Officer Rajesh outlined various government welfare schemes, while Kumari Sarita, a counsellor from the One-Stop Centre, raised awareness about child marriage and child labour. SI Jagdish educated attendees on the police’s role in protecting child rights.
A major focus was placed on emergency helplines, including Child Helpline (1098), Women Helpline (1091), and the Gudia Helpline, which play a crucial role in ensuring child safety.
In her concluding remarks, Krishna Devi stressed the need for community vigilance in protecting children. She urged the public to create a safe and nurturing environment where children can grow up in a family-oriented atmosphere.
