A Bangladeshi student studying at a private university was seen dressed as a transgender person and extorting money from people at various temples and other locations in Shimla.
According to the police, a complaint was received on Friday alleging that a person who describes himself as a Bangladeshi Muslim on his Instagram profile has been roaming around Shimla in a different guise. It was also alleged that this person, dressed as a transgender individual, had visited Kalibari Temple and was extorting money from people.
Taking swift action, the police investigated the matter and found that the man was identified as Islam Mohammad Shahidullah (30), a native of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. He is currently enrolled in a BJMC course at APG University in Shimla.
Upon questioning, the individual stated that he belongs to the transgender community, worships Goddess Kali, and has visited the Kalibari Temple, Jakhu Temple, as well as various markets and temples several times during Navratri.
During the investigation, the police inspected his documents, including both old and current passports, his Study Visa Type S-1, his Stay Visa, and his National ID card, all of which were found to be correct and valid. Furthermore, his APG University fee slips and Class 10 and 12 mark sheets were also found to be genuine.
Police said that further investigation is ongoing in the matter.
The incident also drew flak from Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, who demanded a serious investigation, stating that if a foreign national is roaming around the town dressed as a transgender person, then the matter should be taken seriously, keeping national security in mind.
