The UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla rail track was damaged between Sanwara and Koti when boulders fell on it during the excavation work on the hill yesterday.

Since the Parwanoo-Solan section is being four-laned, the excavation of the hill often leads to falling of boulders from the hill, though this was the first time when the rail track was damaged.

Following the incident, traffic on the track came to a halt. A passenger train on the Shimla-Kalka route was stopped ahead of Dharampur.  No loss of life was reported.

Rail staff immediately begun work to restore the damaged track at the earliest.

Railway officials said rail traffic was restored around 6:45 pm and only one train, which was halted near Dharampur, proceeded for its ongoing journey. — TNS
