The iconic Chaugan ground in the heart of Chamba town has been closed to the public for the next four and a half months to facilitate extensive restoration and upkeep. Beginning Tuesday, all access routes to the ground were sealed with barbed wire and the administration has warned that any attempt to breach the perimeter, whether by scaling iron railings or entering forcibly, will invite strict action.
Officials said the decision was prompted by the severe deterioration the Chaugan suffers each year due to continuous footfall and a busy calendar of events. No activity will be permitted on the premises until mid-April and the public will not be allowed entry during this period.
During restoration, uneven patches and pits will be filled and levelled, followed by regular watering to help regenerate grass cover across the ground. Once the lawn thickens uniformly, worn-out patches will be cleared to ensure a smooth and healthy surface. The administration expects to reopen the Chaugan to the public by April 15.
A heritage landmark and the pride of Chamba, the Chaugan is not only a visual attraction but also a major revenue generator. The eight-day international Minjar Fair alone brings in crores of rupees for the district administration. The ground hosts political rallies, cultural programmes and district- and state-level sports events for schools and colleges throughout the year. But the rush of activities from April to December leaves the lawn battered, necessitating its annual winter closure for maintenance.
Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal said the Chaugan would remain closed until further orders to ensure its proper restoration. He appealed to residents and social organisations to cooperate in preserving the historic ground so that its famed green expanse remains lush and vibrant in the year ahead.
