Residents of Naggar and Patlikuhl in Kullu district have urged the administration to check illegal mining in the Beas.
They said the illegal activity might change water course in the region, posing threat to villages situated alongside the river.
Lal Chand, a resident of Patlikuhl, said illegal mining was rampant on the banks of the Beas, near Patlikuhl, and in Mahili Vihal and Larankelo Vihal areas falling under the Nathan panchayat. However, due to a rise in the water level of the Beas in the last two days, the mafia had temporarily suspended the practice.
Vibhu Sharma, another resident, said due to unscientific mining, the water course of the river might change. He said they had also submitted a memorandum to the Kullu administration demanding a check on illegal mining in the area.
On the other hand, Suresh Kumar, District Mining Officer, Kullu, denied any such activity in the area.
He said following complaints, they inspected the spot, but no such illegal work was being carried out. “We are keeping a close vigil on offenders and strict action will be taken. The Mining Department will take help of the police authorities, if need arose, to arrest those involved in the illegal practice.”
He said residents had been told to report any such matter to them immediately.
