The joint strength of vocational education and passion for creativity is at full display at Government Model Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Fatehpur, in Kangra district. Laxman Singh, a student of Class XII, who had opted for the ‘automobiles’ subject, has fabricated a petrol-powered tractor, crafted entirely from scrap.
This homegrown innovation is not just an engineering feat but it is also a shining example of sustainable design and waste management.
In a display of ingenuity, the automobile student hailing from Hori Devi village in Fatehpur initiated scrap-based fabrication to fulfill his dream project at his home and completed it in around two months under the guidance of his teachers Yudhvir Singh and Ravinder Kumar.
He thereafter demonstrated his model during the annual practicals at his school.
Impressed by his passion, the school administration felicitated him on Saturday.
Laxman collected useless and discarded automobile parts from scrap dealers at Rehan, Jassur and Pathankot and fabricated this tractor model at his home. He used 135-cc engine of Yama bike, gear box and dimension of Omni van for his model.
The whole input cost for this model has been borne by his family. He said that initially he had prepared small models of tractors but later, he was keen on fabricating petrol-driven tractor — a dream which was he was finally able to realise under the guidance of his teachers and financial support by his parents. He said he was yet to complete the body fabrication (front and rear side) of the tractor.
According to Yudveer Singh and Ravinder Kumar, automobile engineering teachers and guides of Laxman, after over two months of hard work, technical understanding and intensive study of automobiles, Laxman succeeded in fabricating the petrol-driven tractor which was not a mere dummy model but could move with petrol.
“This effort embodies the concept of ‘Waste to Best” and gives the message that if given the right direction and guidance, students of government schools can also set an example in the technical field,” says school principal Mitu Gautam. She asserted that Laxman had also inspired other students.
This promising student of Fatehpur has proved that if there is innovation in thinking and robust hard work, then even junk can bring revolution.
