Shimla, July 8

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur today said that the government was committed to restoring the old glory of Shimla city. Several projects, including to augment water supply, were being implemented to make the lives of people comfortable.

He laid the foundation stone of four development projects worth Rs 55 crore, namely Sabzi Mandi at Darni Ka Bagicha on the Shimla bypass to be constructed at a cost of Rs 19.82 crore, a flyover at Khalini Chowk to be built at a cost of Rs 9.82 crore, foot overbridges phase-II and III near Vikasnagar for Rs 7.62 crore and a bus stand, Transport Office, workshop and a commercial complex at Dhalli to be constructed at a cost of Rs 17.18 crore.

Thakur, while addressing a public meeting at Dhalli, said that all these projects would greatly benefit Shimla city. He added that a Rs 1,813 crore water scheme was being constructed for the capital city, which on completion would provide 24 hours supply to people.

He said that a double-lane tunnel was being constructed at Dhalli. Not even one tunnel was constructed in Shimla city after Independence. He added that the land acquisition process would be initiated for the international airport at Mandi and the railway network would be strengthened. “Twenty more electric buses will be provided for Shimla city and 15 electric buses for Dharamsala city. Charging stations will be set up at Tara Devi,” he said.

Thakur said, “The Rs 70 crore Chabba water supply scheme was completed in record nine months after Shimla city witnessed an unprecedented crisis during the summer of 2018. This will solve the water problem of the city”.

Earlier, the Chief Minister flagged off 21 advanced firefighting vehicles worth Rs 7.64 crore for different parts of the state from The Ridge here. Urban Development Minister Suresh Bhardwaj was also present.
