In the view of increasing illicit sale of tobacco products, the state government has directed all Assistant Commissioners (Food Safety) and Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) to implement Sections 7(1), 8(2) and 13 of Cigarette and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act-2003 (COTPA) while carrying out inspections and take the necessary action.
In a letter to Assistant Commissioners (Food Safety) and CMOs, Joint Commissioner (Food Safety)-cum-Director referred to Sections 7(1) and 8(2) of the COTPA-2003 that prohibits sale of cigarette and other Tobacco products without the statutory warning that it is injurious to health and Section 13 that authorises the Food and Drug Administration officers to raid the premises and seize the illicit products. — TNS
