Himachal CM's Adviser Gokul Butail sets austerity example, opts for token Re 1 salary
Government cites a shortage of funds, rising debt and difficulties in meeting basic obligations such as the payment of salaries, pension and development expenditure, the continuation of highly-paid posts of Adviser, chairperson and heads of various boards and corporations raises serious questions
At a time when Himachal is grappling with a financial crisis, Gokul Butail, Adviser to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has set an example by opting to draw a token salary of just one rupee. Butail, a native of Palampur, has made the city proud through his gesture of public responsibility.
While the government cites a shortage of funds, rising debt and difficulties in meeting basic obligations such as the payment of salaries, pension and development expenditure, the continuation of highly-paid posts of Adviser, chairperson and heads of various boards and corporations raises serious questions. These positions not only carry substantial salaries but also entail expenses on official vehicles, staff, accommodation and other perks, further burdening the state exchequer.
