Cold wave, Keylong freezes at -9.9°C

Most parts of Himachal reeled under a biting cold wave conditions, as the minimum temperatures plummeted. Keylong in tribal Lahaul and Spiti district experienced the coldest night of the season with the mercury dipping to minus 9.9°C.

MET predicts clear weather over 6 days

The piercing cold wave has intensified even as the region got respite from rain and snow. The local MeT office has predicted clear weather in the state over the next six days from Saturday. A sharp fall in temperatures when the weather clears after snowfall is a usual phenomenon and the temperatures will be normal in the next few days, said sources at the MeT office.

As many as 150 link roads in the state are still closed. The piercing cold wave has intensified even as the region got respite from rain and snow. The local MeT office has predicted clear weather in the state over the next six days from tomorrow. “A sharp fall in temperatures when the weather clears after snowfall is a usual phenomenon and the temperatures will be normal in the next few days,” said sources at the MeT office.

Tribal areas and other higher mountains received another spell of snowfall last night and Kalpa in Kinnaur district recorded 17 cm of snow, followed by Khadrala (8 cm), Kothi (3 cm) and Kufri (1 cm).

Kalpa in Kinnaur district shivered at minus 3.6°C, while Manali and Kufri recorded a low of minus 1.2°C and 1.5°C, followed by Sundernagar and Bhuntar 3°C, Solan and Dalhousie 3.4°C, Palampur 4.7°C, Shimla 5°C and Una 6°C.

Scattered rain occurred at isolated places and Tinder was the wettest with 40 mm rainfall, followed by Kasol 16 mm, Reckong Peo 15 mm, Bajura 13 mm, Gohar 12 mm, Jubbal and Bhuntar 10 mm, Seobagh 9 mm, Banjar 8 mm, Narkanda 5 mm and Shimla 3 mm.

Una was the hottest in the region with a high of 27°C, a rise of five degrees since yesterday, while Nahan, Sundernagar and Solan recorded day temperatures of 25.4°C, 23.2°C and 23°C, followed by Palampur 20.1°C, Shimla 17.4°C, and Dharamsala 15.4°C. Keylong reeled under freezing cold during the day as the maximum temperature stayed at minus 1.2°C.

All natural resources of water such as springs, lakes, rivulets and tributaries of snowfed Sutlej, Beas and Ravi have frozen, drastically reducing the discharge of water and affecting hydroelectric power generation. Thick ground frost occurred at many places in higher hills, making driving risky on slippery roads while water pipes froze at many places.
