Couple detained for abandoning newborn in Hamirpur hospital

The police on Wednesday detained a couple, who reportedly abandoned a newborn baby girl in the Government Medical College and Hospital here on Tuesday. It was alleged that the couple also tried to sell the baby for Rs 10,000 and when they did not succeed, they abandoned her in the hospital and left without informing the staff there. People present in the hospital said that the couple was not happy with the birth of the baby girl and tried to sell her. The hospital authorities later informed the police about the incident.

Meanwhile, the police apprehended the mother of the newborn and started an investigation. SP Balbir Thakur said that the mother was detained and the baby was put under care at the hospital. Action in the case would be initiated after knowing the outcome of the investigation, he added.
