UNA, OCTOBER 13

Tibetan religious leader Dalai Lama today stressed on the need for good relations between India and China. Speaking to media persons during a short halt at Una on way to Chandigarh, he said both countries were not only global financial powers, but also had rich traditions and cultural values.

Reacting to the question on independence of Tibet, the Dalai Lama said in 1974, the Tibetans had decided not to persist with the demand for Independence, adding, however, that their demand was only meant to preserve the Tibetan culture while living in China.

The Dalai Lama said the Tibetans had strong beliefs in the Buddhist teachings from Nalanda, which are based on logic. He said some intellectuals from China too believe that the ancient Nalanda teachings had a scientific base. He said these ancient teachings needed to be blended with the modern teaching methodologies.

He said Tibetans were living in India as refugees, but had been enjoying freedom for the last 60 years.
