Dehra police save villager from losing Rs 7 lakh in fixed deposit to cyber fraud

Jaswan-Pragpur villager's bank account was hacked after he clicked a fake Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana link on his WhatsApp number

The cyber cell of the Dehra police on Friday saved Ravi Kant, a resident of Nalsuha village in the Jaswan-Pragpur Assembly constituency, from losing Rs 7 lakh in fixed deposit with his bank.

As per information, Ravi Kant had received a fake Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana link on his WhatsApp number a few days ago. When he clicked the link, cyber fraudsters allegedly hacked his bank account.

Soon after, his mobile phone developed some technical glitch and he stopped receiving bank messages. When he reactivated the mobile phone sim card, he got an SMS on Wednesday last regarding the withdrawal of Rs 7 lakh from his Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR) at a private bank at Dehra.

He immediately visited the office of the SP, Dehra, and lodged a fraud complaint with the cyber cell.

SP, Dehra, Mayank Chaudhary says that the cyber cell immediately started an investigation into the cybercrime. “Through the nodal officer of the bank concerned, the cyber cell succeeded in freezing the account of the complainant on Friday and saved Rs 7 lakh from being withdrawn by the cyber fraudsters. The frozen money will now be released through a legal process being initiated through the local judicial court,” he added.

The Dehra police have also started an investigation to identify fraudsters, who had tried to commit this cybercrime. The district police have cautioned the general public to be wary of falling prey to cyber fraudsters and not to respond to such suspicious links received on their mobile phones.
