Ex-servicemen across Himachal Pradesh have expressed immense pride and joy over the promotion of Param Vir Chakra (PVC) awardee Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar to the honorary rank of Captain. The honorary commission was conferred on the gallant soldier on the occasion of Republic Day during a ceremonial function held at Vijay Path in New Delhi.
Currently serving with the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (JAK RIF) regiment of the Army, Sanjay Kumar was awarded the honorary rank in recognition of his exemplary service, exceptional leadership and extraordinary bravery. His elevation has been widely hailed as a moment of honour not only for the armed forces but also for the people of Himachal Pradesh, his home state.
Senior Army officials bestowed the honorary commission during the Republic Day event, acknowledging his distinguished military career and unparalleled contribution to the nation. Captain Sanjay Kumar’s journey—from joining the Army as a Sepoy to rising through the ranks by successfully qualifying all cadre promotions—stands as a powerful example of dedication, discipline and courage.
Reacting to the promotion, Captain Jagdish Verma (Retd), chairman of the United Front of Ex-Servicemen (JCOs and OR), Himachal Pradesh—a joint organisation representing retired personnel of the Army, Navy and Air Force—said the entire ex-servicemen community was elated. He described the elevation as a moment of immense pride for the armed forces fraternity and the state.
Captain Verma recalled that Captain Sanjay Kumar was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award, for his unparalleled courage during the 1999 Kargil War. During the conflict, he displayed exceptional bravery, while leading an assault to evict heavily armed Pakistani intruders from Indian positions, despite sustaining serious injuries. His fearless actions proved decisive and have since become a defining chapter in India’s military history.
“The valour, unwavering dedication and selfless service of this brave Kargil hero continue to inspire serving soldiers, veterans and the youth of the nation,” Captain Verma said.
