Mandi, February 12

Residents of the Behna panchayat under the Balh Assembly constituency of Mandi district have demanded that the state government exclude the panchayat from the area under the jurisdiction of the Mandi Municipal Corporation at the earliest.

A delegation of women, under the leadership of Mahila Mandal president Meera Devi, met Additional Deputy Commissioner Rohit Rathore on Monday. The delegation submitted a memorandum of their demands to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu through the ADC.

"We were opposing inclusion of our panchayat in the MC area because it is a completely rural area, which does not fulfil the criteria for its inclusion in the Mandi MC. Our issues have been ignored by the MC and state government for a long time. We do not want to stay with the MC," Meera Devi said.

"In the past, we wrote to the Deputy Commissioner (Mandi) in this regard, who had asked the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Balh) to submit a report after discussing the matter with the residents. The SDM had submitted his report to the DC but no concrete action was taken to resolve this issue," she added.

“We have decided to boycott the Lok Sabha Elections if our demand is not accepted timely," the Mahila Mandal president said.
