Experts call for scientific practices in apple cultivation

Over 100 growers, FPOs discuss disease mgmt, climate adaptation

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Himachal Pradesh, organised a day-long interactive session titled ‘Enabling a Competitive and Climate-Resilient Apple Economy’ in Shimla on Wednesday, bringing together over 100 apple growers and representatives from more than 15 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).

The session focused on equipping apple cultivators with the knowledge and tools required to address emerging challenges such as disease management and changing climatic conditions impacting apple production in the state. Discussions underscored the importance of collective action through FPOs to strengthen the apple value chain and improve bargaining power, aggregation and market access.

Participants also deliberated on key government initiatives aimed at enhancing horticulture value addition and expanding domestic and export market linkages. The programme highlighted CII’s interventions in promoting technology adoption, quality improvement, post-harvest management and digital market integration.

Mala Sharma, Project Director, Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), stressed the need for structured policy support to build resilience in the horticulture sector. “Climate variability is no longer a future risk — it is a present operational reality for apple growers. Under MIDH, the focus is on promoting high-density plantations, improved planting material, micro-irrigation and post-harvest infrastructure to ensure productivity and income stability,” she said.

Manilokeshwar Chauhan, Director and Head, CII Himachal Pradesh, emphasised the adoption of scientific and research-backed cultivation practices. “We must embrace new-age apple growing techniques supported by evidence and innovation,” he said.

Sachin Sharma, Director, Agro Farm Venture Pvt Ltd, said with appropriate infrastructure support and digital tools for grading and aggregation, FPOs could significantly enhance farmer incomes while building a competitive and climate-resilient apple economy.

By convening policymakers, grower associations, industry leaders and subject experts, the session sought to lay the groundwork for a coordinated roadmap to strengthen Himachal’s apple ecosystem and position it for long-term sustainability and global competitiveness.
