Experts discuss importance of cluster-based natural farming models at NABARD meet

Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur, hosted the NABARD-Punjab regional review-cum-coordination meet, which was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Dr Ashok Kumar Panda, who graced the event as the chief guest.

In his inaugural address, Dr Panda emphasised the significance of cluster-based natural farming models for Punjab, the urgent adoption of water conservation technologies and the importance of promoting indigenous cattle breeds that are naturally suited to regional agro-climatic conditions. He remarked that sustainable agriculture must integrate scientific innovation with traditional knowledge to ensure long-term agricultural resilience and environmental sustainability.

The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Director of Extension Education Dr Vinod Sharma, who reaffirmed the university’s commitment to strengthening partnership-based outreach and collaborative initiatives with the NABARD for advancing agricultural and rural development.

The meet was graced by Vinod Kumar Arya, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Punjab, as the guest of honour and Manohar Lal, General Manager, NABARD, Punjab, as a special guest.

The meet featured a series of high-quality technical sessions led by experts from university. In the field of animal sciences, Dr Shivani Katoch, head, Department of Animal Nutrition, delivered an insightful lecture on scientific feeding strategies, nutritional innovations and sustainable livestock management. Prof Rakesh Chahota highlighted cutting-edge biotechnological interventions for crop improvement, diagnostics and value addition. Adding a modern perspective, Ashish Dhiman discussed the emerging role of artificial intelligence (AI) in human nutrition, focusing on precision assessment and advanced health monitoring applications.

The programme witnessed the participation of 20 delegates, including DDMs from different districts of Punjab, who actively engaged in discussions and shared field experiences on implementing development schemes at the grassroots level.

As part of the exposure and learning component, participants visited the hydroponics unit and model dairy farm of the university. The field visit provided insights into innovative fodder production systems, scientific dairy management, and integrated research models demonstrated at the university.
