The district police have busted a fake currency racket operating in and around the area and arrested two accused near the Punjab border, close to Ropar.
The case came to light after the accused allegedly duped a dhaba owner on the national highway bypass about a week ago. According to police, one of the accused handed over 30 notes of Rs 200 denomination and requested the 74-year-old owner to exchange them for Rs 500 notes.
The victim later discovered that 16 of the notes were fake, resulting in a loss of Rs 3,200, while the remaining 14 notes were genuine. He subsequently informed the police, following which an investigation was launched. SP Balbir Thakur said two persons had been arrested in connection with the fake currency racket and further links in the case were being probed.
