The Tibetan New Year 2153 begins on Wednesday, with Losar celebrations unfolding across McLeodganj, Dharamsala and nearby settlements. This year carries special significance as it marks the rare ‘Fire Horse Year’, a combination that appears only once in the 60-year Tibetan astrological cycle and is regarded as one of the most dynamic and powerful alignments.In Tibetan astrology, the Horse symbolises Lungta or Wind Horse, the embodiment of inner strength, courage and positive life force. The fire element is believed to amplify these traits with intensity, speed and transformative power. Religious scholars describe the Fire Horse year as a period encouraging bold decisions, leadership and spiritual as well as creative growth.Preparations have been underway for days. Homes and monasteries are thoroughly cleaned as part of ritual purification. On the 29th day of the last month in the Tibetan calendar, families observe Nyi Shu Gu, a ceremony meant to dispel negativity and misfortune accumulated over the past year.Losar festivities include prayers at monasteries, hoisting of colourful prayer flags, lighting butter lamps and organising community gatherings featuring traditional music and dance. Families prepare festive dishes such as Drekar and Chang-koe, symbolising prosperity, harmony and togetherness. Visiting relatives and sharing community feasts remain central to the celebration.For Tibetans living in exile, Losar transcends ritual. It serves as a reaffirmation of identity, resilience and unity. Many also pay obeisance to the Dalai Lama, who recently returned to McLeodganj following a two-month winter stay in Karnataka.Distinct customs mark the first day of Losar. Traditionally, Tibetans avoid purchasing or spending money, believing that financial transactions on New Year’s Day may invite hardship throughout the year. Another unique practice is that every Tibetan is considered a year older on the first day of Losar, rather than on individual birthdays.Residents describe the Fire Horse Year 2026 as especially meaningful. “It comes only once in 60 years,” said Pema Dolma of McLeodganj, expressing joy at celebrating the festival in India.
