The fish seed production in Himachal is set to double, said Vivek Chandel, Director of the Fisheries Department, while addressing at state-level workshop organised at the Directorate of Fisheries at Bilaspur on Thursday. He added that the initiative would strengthen, modernise and make Himachal Pradesh a self-reliant state in fish seed production.
Chandel said that the workshop titled ‘Promotion of Fish Seed Production in the State through Best Management Practices and Technology Infusion’ was held to educate stakeholders on seed production. He added that the field officers from across the state, particularly the in-charge officers of various fish farms, participated in the workshop. The objective of the workshop was to make fish seed production in the state more effective, high-quality and sustainable, thereby further strengthening the fisheries sector economically.
Chandel said that the department was working with a concrete strategy to double fish seed production in the state. He added that at present, the production of eggs of carp species was about three million, while the production of trout eggs was around two million, which was planned to be doubled in the coming period. “Officers are being trained through this workshop to achieve this target by using best management practices prevalent at the national and international levels and the latest technologies will be implemented in all fish farms in the state in a phased manner,” he claimed.
