Mandi, July 4

The people, affected by the Pathankot-Mandi highway fourlane project, held a protest march against the state government in Mandi today. They demanded a fair compensation and rehabilitation in lieu of their land acquired for the four-lane highway project.

The protesters accused the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the state government of providing poor compensation for their land acquired for the project. A large number of affected persons gathered under the banner of the Four-lane Samnvay Samiti here.

Virender Thakur, president of the samiti, said, “The NHAI is providing poor compensation for their land between Narla and Mandi. We have been requesting the government to implement the Land Acquisition Act 2013, in which there is a clear provision for fair compensation and rehabilitation of affected people”.

“During the Assembly elections, the BJP had promised to provide fair compensation to the people affected by the highway widening project. But the state government has ignored their concerns,” he said. Later, they submitted a memorandum addressed to the government, to the Deputy Commissioner.
