Palampur, February 10

A French agency has agreed for the funding of a Rs135.40-crore sewerage project for Palampur town. The agency would lay sewerage lines in five municipal wards of the Palampur Municipal Corporation.

Addressing mediapersons here this morning, local MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Ashish Butail said the project was being funded by agency known as “Agency French Development”.

Tendering process underway

The tendering process for the project has already started and following wards of the Municipal Corporation — Lohana, Ghuggar Tanda , Aima, Suggar, Ghuggar Khirloor and Bindravan — would be covered under the project. Besides, in ward numbers 2 and 3, the sewerage lines would be relaid, as the old sewerage in these wards, laid by the old municipal council, has outlived its life. During the BJP rule, all development activities in the town remained suspended due to the shortage of funds. I will personally review the progress of various projects. —Ashish Butail, Local MLA & Chief Parliamentary Secretary

“The tendering process for the project has already started and following wards of the Municipal Corporation — Lohana, Ghuggar Tanda , Aima, Suggar, Ghuggar Khirloor and Bindravan — would be covered under the project. Besides, in ward numbers 2 and 3, the sewerage lines would be relaid, as the old sewerage system in these wards, laid by the old municipal council, had outlived its life. This is the biggest development project sanctioned by the Congress government for Palampur,” Butail added.

He said under the project not only sewerage lines would be installed in the town but the existing water supply system of the town would be augmented by setting up the latest filtration and purification equipment to provide clean water to the residents of Palampur.

He said there were 15 wards in the Palampur MC. Under this project, half of the town, which was thickly populated, would get a sewerage system, while there was also a proposal to cover remaining parts of the town in the next phase.

The state government will prepare a master plan for proper and planned development of Palampur town. The main focus of the plan will be on developing Palampur tea town as a major tourist hub and maintaining a clean and green environment, said Butail.

He said he had already taken up the matter with the authorities concerned to prepare a master plan at the earliest. The plan was needed to check haphazard and unplanned development, he added.

He said suggestions for the plan would be sought from NGOs, retired engineers and bureaucrats settled in the town. He added that the previous BJP government had upgraded the Palampur municipal council to a municipal corporation, but did not prepare a master plan for the town’s proper development.

He said during the BJP rule, all development activities in the town remained suspended due to the shortage of funds. He added that projects like the construction of a circuit house, indoor stadium and the expansion of a bus stand were the worst hit.

He assured the people of the town that he would personally review the progress of various development projects from time to time and ensure that there was no shortage of funds.
