Shimla: Himachal has been successful in the conservation of Chamurthi horse breed, known for its stamina and sure-footedness.
- Found in mountainous areas of the state, mainly in the snow-bound Spiti valley, the breed faced extinction a few years ago.
- 23 stallions and 44 mares are being reared at a breeding farm in Lari, Spiti, set up in 2002. The state count has risen to 4,000.
