Global hues light up Mandi as international cultural parade marks Shivratri

A spectacular international cultural parade featuring 35 cultural troupes from India and abroad added vibrant colour, rhythm and tradition to the ongoing international Shivratri festival in Mandi on Friday. The grand procession was flagged off by Education Minister Rohit Thakur from the Deputy Commissioner’s office complex.The parade began with the Indian tricolour leading the procession, symbolising unity and national pride. It passed through the Seri stage and culminated at the Indira Market complex, with thousands of spectators lining both sides of the route to witness the cultural spectacle. The city wore a festive look as people enthusiastically recorded the performances on their mobile phones.Addressing the gathering, Rohit Thakur said the international Shivratri festival was not merely a celebration of faith but also a symbol of cultural unity and global brotherhood. He said participation by artistes from different countries and Indian states strengthened Himachal’s tradition of Atithi Devo Bhava and enhanced Mandi’s presence on the global cultural map.As many as 11 international cultural troupes participated in the parade, representing Argentina, France, the United States, Sri Lanka (two teams), Russia, Venezuela, Nepal, Kazakhstan and Cambodia. An African continent group comprising artistes from Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Liberia, Eswatini, Lesotho, Cameroon and South Africa also took part.Each troupe presented captivating folk performances. Argentine artistes enthralled the audience with an energetic fire dance, while performers from Russia impressed spectators with a visually striking LED dance that blended modernity with tradition.Besides, seven national-level troupes from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Punjab (two teams), Assam and Manipur participated in the procession. From Himachal, seven district-level troupes representing Shimla, Hamirpur, Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur and Sirmaur showcased the state’s rich folk heritage. Five local cultural groups from Mandi district added distinct regional flavour, while a special Mandav presentation by women from self-help groups emerged as a major attraction.The parade concluded with a melodious performance by the Home Guards band, drawing huge applause from the audience.
