Shimla, March 4

Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur today accused the Congress regime of making desperate attempts to cling to power and prevent the collapse of the government at all costs.

Addressing a press conference here today, Thakur said privilege notices had been issued to seven BJP legislators for their conduct after the Assembly had been adjourned on the day of the passing of the Budget on February 28. “They have been asked to give their reply within 10 days and hearing has been scheduled for March 14. What is even more surprising is that the Privileges Committee has been notified today only,” he disclosed.

“We have seen people fling the mikes and papers in assemblies across the country where no penalty was imposed,” he said. He added that this reflected the frantic attempts by the state government to cling to power.

Thakur said it was amidst this situation of political instability and the fear of losing the Lok Sabha elections that the Chief Minister was making such announcements just when the model code of conduct would be announced anytime. “The Chief Minister has yet again tried to mislead the people as the annual expenditure on this scheme will be Rs 4,000 crore and not Rs 800 crore, as he claimed,” he said.

“Within six days after the passing of the Budget, the CM has made a big announcement which again shows he is in the habit of lying,” said Thakur.

Thakur countered CM’s claims that Rs 1,500 each would be given to five lakh women. “As per the census, there are 38 lakh women in Himachal and about 22 lakh fall in the eligible category of 18 to 60 years,” he remarked. This means that only those women who are already getting social security pension of Rs 1,100 will be given Rs 1,500.

He said out of a total of 7.83 lakh people who get social security pension, there were 4.55 lakh women and as such it was these women who were likely to be covered. “People have lost faith in the Congress regime as it misled the women even before the 2022 assembly polls and now gains before 2024 Lok Sabha polls.,” he said.
