Govt grants remission to 397 prisoners on Republic Day eve
As per official records, 1,083 convicted persons are lodged in various jails across the state
As many as 397 eligible convicted prisoners lodged in various jails in the state have been granted remission by the state government on the occasion of the Republic Day, 2026.
A 45-day remission has been granted to prisoners who have been sentenced for life imprisonment and those who have been sentenced for more than 10 years. Similarly, a remission of 30 days has been granted to prisoners sentenced to imprisonment for more than five years and up to 10 years. Prisoners sentenced to imprisonment for more than three years up to five years have been granted a remission of 21 days. Prisoners sentenced to imprisonment for more than one years and up to three years have been granted a remission of 15 days while prisoners sentenced to imprisonment for more than six months and up to one year have been granted a remission of seven days.
Abhishek Trivedi, Additional Director General, Prison and Correctional Services, said that the state government has been announcing remission on this occasion for prisoners who have maintained good conduct during their incarceration. As per official records, out of 1,083 convicted prisoners lodged in various jails across the state about 397 prisoners will benefit from the grant of State Government Remission on the eve of the Republic Day” he said.
“The remission has been granted in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 473 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, Section 432 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and Chapter XVIII of the HP Jail Manual, 2021” he said.
However, Trivedi asserted that the remission will not be applicable to certain categories of prisoners, including detenues, prisoners convicted under serious offences such as those under the NDPS Act, POCSO Act, Prevention of Corruption Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, offences related to terrorism, kidnapping for ransom, habitual offenders, prisoners who have jumped parole, and other excluded categories as specified in the relevant notification.
