Govt schools ‘lack’ computer infra

SHIMLA: After the massive expansion of the school network and nearly 100 per cent enrolment at the elementary level, Himachal is now in a consolidation phase, focusing on strengthening of infrastructure by providing basic facilities and equipment.

After the massive expansion of the school network and nearly 100 per cent enrolment at the elementary level, Himachal is now in a consolidation phase, focusing on strengthening of infrastructure by providing basic facilities and equipment.

As on September 30, 2018, nearly 99 per cent of 15,368 government schools had been provided safe drinking water and separate toilets for boys and girls had been constructed in 99 per cent schools, according to a Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE ) report.

Over 99 per cent senior secondary and more that 98 per cent high schools had electricity connections while only 6.4 per cent primary and 11.30 per cent middle schools were yet to be provided power connection.

As far as libraries were concerned, 88.54 primary, 72.78 middle, 76.77 high and 88.11 per cent and senior secondary schools were having libraries with a good collection of books and periodicals but in case of computers, the situation was quite unsatisfactory at the primary and middle level and reasonably good at the high school level.

Only 2.40 per cent primary and 15.66 per cent middle school had access to computers while 61.67 high schools and 89.40 per cent senior secondary schools had been equipped with computers, implying that the digital era was yet to usher in fully at the middle and high school level while serious efforts were required to provide computers to all students at the senior secondary level.

The playgrounds were considered necessary to keep students busy in sports but 30.60 per cent primary and 33.11 per cent middle schools lacked playground facility while 71.95 per cent high and 88.11 per cent senior secondary schools had playground facility.

The state has done quite well in periodical medical check-up of students and 92.85 per cent primary, 92.43 per cent middle, 94.97 per cent high and 95.77 per cent senior secondary school students got medical check-up.

For the safety of students and schools, the construction of a boundary wall had been undertaken on a large scale and so far boundary walls had been constructed in 66.44 per cent primary, 58.35 per cent middle, 70.30 per cent high and 74.10 per cent senior secondary schools.

All 15,368 schools had 60,757 rooms but of these 11,141 require major repairs while 6,493 need minor repairs. In the primary section alone, 6,116 out of 33,191 rooms needed major repairs while 4,246 rooms required minor repairs. However, none of the school building had been declared unsafe.

Education Minister Suresh Bhardwaj said the basic facilities had been provided in almost all schools and the process of equipping schools with computers was underway.
