The Himachal Pradesh Government is poised to encourage youth towards sports and build state-of-the-art sports infrastructure in the state. This was announced by Rajesh Dharmani, Technical Education Minister, at the inauguration of the five-day 69th U-19 Girls National Handball Championship at Ghumarwin in Bilaspur on Sunday. He expressed great pride in the fact that over 500 girls from across the country were participating in the championship. The event is being organised in collaboration with the departments of sports, education and the local administration.
A total of 30 teams, 384 players and 100 officials from various states, union-territories and educational boards are participating in the competition. These included teams of Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Vidya Bharati, DAV College Management Committee, CISCE, and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.
On the first day of the competition, 12 matches were played, starting at 2 pm after the inauguration. In the first match, Himachal Pradesh faced Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti in pool one, while Karnataka and Punjab played the opening match in pool two.
Dharmani urged local community, especially schools in and around Ghumarwin, to take students to such events to encourage them to take part in sports. It will help in inculcating discipline and keep them away from drugs.
Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar, Superintendent of Police Sandeep Dhawal, Ghumarwin SDM Gaurav Chaudhary and officials of sports and education department were also present on the occasion.
