Palampur, August 7
Normal life has been affected here due to heavy rains for the past 48 hours. All rivers, rivulets and streams in the region are in spate. Public property, including roads, water supply and irrigation schemes, suffered extensive damage, while many parts of the region went without power supply after transmission lines were damaged.
Vehicular traffic on internal roads remained suspended for hours following heavy landslides. The Public Works Department (PWD) removed debris from the roads and restored traffic.
The lower areas of Palampur are worst affected where small rivulets are in spate.Official sources said, PWD roads suffered extensive damage in Palampur, Jaisinghpur, Bhawarna and Baijnath divisions while the water supply schemes of the the Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) department were also damaged. Schoolchildren and villagers in rural areas risked their lives by crossing flooded streams and rivers to go to schools, reporting thin attendance. However, no loss of life has been reported from any part of the area.
The administration has published helpline phone numbers and set up control rooms in the SDM office, Palampur, Baijnath, Jaisinghpur and Dheera, to tackle emergencies arising due to the heavy rains.
